Didier Deschamps set a WK record with a win over Sweden

Didier Deschamps became the coach with the most wins at the World Cup after France beat Sweden. The French coach has led Les Blues to 17 victories. Deschamps (57) took the record from German coach Helmut Schön, who led the former West Germany to 16 victories between 1964 and 1978. During Schoen's tenure, West Germany lost the final to England in 1966 and defeated the Netherlands in their home country in 1974. Former Brazil and Portugal coach Luiz Filipe Scolari is third with 14 wins. Deschamps was set to reach 18 wins at the World Cup, but was replaced by his assistant Guy Steffen during the group stage win over Norway. Deschamps, who captained France to world champions in 1998, had to miss the match due to his mother's funeral. Deschamps' coaching tenure began in 2012 and he went on to play in his first World Cup in 2014 in Brazil. In 2018, France won the World Cup in Russia, while 4 years ago, Argentina defeated Deschamps and his team in the final. Paraguay will face France next Saturday. If France wins, they will face either Morocco or Canada in the quarterfinals. Deschamps has already announced his retirement as coach soon after the World Cup, ending his 14-year stint as coach of the French national team.
