World Cup 2026 Group Stage Preview: All 12 Groups Analyzed

For the first time in World Cup history, 48 nations will compete across 12 groups of 4 teams each. The top two from each group, plus 8 best third-placed teams, advance to the Round of 32.

Group A — Host Group

Mexico co-host and open the tournament on June 11 against South Africa. Qatar (previous host) and Ecuador complete the group.

Group C — Argentina's Group (Defending Champions)

Argentina begin their title defense in a group featuring strong European and African opposition. Expect fireworks.

Dark Horses

Morocco — Semi-finalists in 2022, now with more experience and a settled squad. Could go all the way.
Japan — Technically excellent, with a new generation of Bundesliga-based stars.
USA (hosts) — Playing at home with a young, hungry squad featuring Pulisic, Reyna, and emerging talent.
